How to Obtain a TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) in Armenia?

tin

In Armenia, there are two identification numbers: TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) and SSN (Social Security Number). The TIN is a tax identification code similar to Russia’s IIN, used for processing certain documents. However, it is issued only to specific categories of foreigners living in Armenia who cannot obtain an SSN.

The SSN, on the other hand, is a social security number that most international citizens planning to live in Armenia for an extended period can obtain.

How to Obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number TIN as a Non-Resident Registered as an Individual Entrepreneur (IE)?

When a foreign citizen registers as an Individual Entrepreneur (IE) in Armenia, they automatically receive a TIN. This number appears on the entrepreneur’s certificate and can be used for:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Signing contracts
  • Working with financial institutions

On the entrepreneur’s certificate, the TIN is an eight-digit number located in the fourth line.

Registering as an IE in Armenia is relatively simple, but it is recommended to consult a specialist to ensure all documents are correctly completed. While registering, you can leave the SSN field blank, but eventually, you will need to obtain a social security card (SSN), as it is a crucial document in Armenia.

How to get Taxpayer Identification Number If You Are Not Registered as an Individual Entrepreneur?

If you have not registered as an entrepreneur, you can still obtain a TIN at the tax office, but you will first need a social security card (SSN).

The social security card is an essential document in Armenia and is required for many government-related procedures. It confirms a person’s right to social protection and contains an SSN number, which is often used instead of the tax identification number (TIN).

In Armenia, it is commonly used for tax purposes. For example, it is required for:

  • Paying taxes
  • Providing identification at banks when opening an account

How to Obtain a Social Security Card (SSN) in Armenia?

The social security card (SSN) is a paper document (A4 format) that contains an identification number. It is issued at the police passport office, using the passport with which the applicant entered Armenia.

Steps to Obtain an SSN:

  1. Visit the passport office (OVIR) at the police station.
  2. Prepare the required documents:
    • Original international passport (if you entered Armenia with it).
    • Notarized Armenian translation of the passport.
    • Copy of the passport page with the entry stamp.

Processing time:

  • If you entered Armenia with an international passport, you will receive the social security card immediately.
  • If you entered with a Domestic passport, you will need additional documents, including a copy of your birth certificate (some offices may also require the original). In this case, the SSN will be issued within a week.

Why Is an SSN Important?

Once you have an SSN, you can:

  • Sign an employment contract without needing a separate TIN from the tax office. The employment contract is registered electronically at the tax office.
  • Open a bank account in Armenia.
  • Pay taxes and complete official registrations.

If you plan to live in Armenia long-term, obtaining an SSN is more practical than a TIN, as it is widely used for identification in financial and government transactions.
